DO CONTACT LENSES HAVE SIDE EFFECT

Side Effects

Contacts are one of the leading ways to correct vision, but there are many disadvantages of contact lenses. This form of treatment is only temporary and has to be changed regularly. Lenses are prone to shifting, dryness, and other complications. Eyes are more susceptible to infection with contact lens wear.

There is a higher risk of bacterial infections with contact lens users. Infections can be caused by prolonged wear, build-up, bacteria, neglectful care and sleeping with contacts on. Symptoms of eye infections include blurry vision, redness, excess mucus production, light sensitivity and irritation. If ignored, these symptoms may result in vision loss.

The most common infection that appears with contact use is conjunctivitis or pink eye. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva and is caused by bacteria. Another common infection is keratitis. Keratitis causes itchiness, pain and foreign body sensation.

Aside from contact lense obstacles, there are various other disadvantages of wearing contact lenses. The cornea can become subject to scratches with poorly fitting contact lenses. Neglectful use of contact lenses during sleep or improper application of lenses can also contribute to corneal scratches or tears. Build-up of dust or debris under the lens will also lead to scratches on the surface of the eye. Eyes and eyelids can become inflamed with continued use. Side effects could also include blurry vision and dry eyes due to lack of oxygen supply to the cornea.
